The Sinking Bell Tower of St. William’ Cathedral

Built by the Augustinians in 1612, the sinking bell tower of Loag is one of the tallest and most massive bell towers in the country. Like other bell tower of its time, it was built far from the church of prevent it from collapsing into the sanctuary in case of an earthquake. However, the sinking bell tower is unusually far- more than 80 meters from the cathedral. It is said that the bell tower is sinking at the rate of an inch a year because of its weight and the sandy ground it is built on. Long ago, a rider on horseback could pass through its doors. Now, visitors have to go down the step and stoops enter. The bell tower, which leans slightly to the north, is still in use today
